Some Girls Bite- Chicagoland Vampires Book 1

Name of  Book: Some Girls Bite
Name of Author: Chloe Neill
Name of Series: Chicagoland Vampires Book One
I read it In: Kindle Format
Goodreads Overall Rating: 4.02
My Rating: 4 out of 5 it was good and worth, not great and life changing
Goodreads Summary: They killed me. They healed me. They changed me.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but I was doing fine until Chicago’s vampires announced their existence to the world. When a rogue vampire attacked me, I was lucky he only got a sip. Another bloodsucker scared him off and decided the best way to save my life was to make me the walking undead.

Now I’ve traded sweating over my thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan “Lord o’ the Manor” Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed,
four-hundred-year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects my gratitude—and servitude. Right…

But someone’s out to get me. Is it the rogue vampire who bit me? A vamp from a rival House? An angry mob bearing torches?

My initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war—and there will be blood.

My Spoiler Free Review:

Plot Development: The plot development in Some Girls Bite is huge. This is a very plot driven story and it is well paced. The story continues to move forward but spends enough time where needed. All of your questions are answered and the pages are clear and concise. There is an underlying mystery that is closed in this novel, there is no cliff-hanger. This is an adult novel and it moves, thinks and speaks in such a way. One thing I did not realize before reading it is that it has a good deal of romance in it. I am not a fan of that but it was tolerable, the story still goes on. If you enjoy political moves, vampires, other creatures of the night, romance, and friendship you will enjoy this story. The world development is huge, the author is opening up an entire world of her own and I am extremely interested to see how all of the parts will play out .

Characters: There are several main characters but it is easy to keep track of who is who. The characters are likable and when needed hate-worthy. There are different kinds of "life forms," for lack of a better term. There are vampires, shapeshifters, people who have magic abilities, water nymphs and all sorts of things. I see the character development being huge in this series, the author left so much room for development.

Next For Me: I would read this series straight through but there are two reasons I won't: One, that's expensive, Two, I get tired of things easy so I am going to read a few books in-between but this will for sure be a series I finish.

Until next time.... keep reading and enjoy the small things in life.

My Unpopular Opinion Review

Spoiler Free Sections:
Plot: For me, the plot was terribly slow and un-interesting after the first 50 pages. I feel like this is a book you read for the beginning and the end. When books have this kind of plot, the middle has to make up for the gap in the mystery. I don't feel like this book did.

Characters: The characters in this novel are not meant to be likable. I was totally okay with that, in fact I find it appealing. However the majority of them got on my nerves. They are adults, mind you adults are aloud and in fact sometimes immature, but I felt like this was a high school drama in a mystery.

Mystery: The mystery that is set up is very interesting and we have an unreliable narrator which was very engaging. This brings me back to the plot issue, I just could not make it through. The idea of a girl on a train watching someone else's life really had me going.... at first.

I looked up the ending and I was not pleased. I guess I don't really need to include a spoiler section.

With all of this being said, I do understand why people fell head over heals for this novel, I just wasn't one and that's okay.

The Accident Season by Moïra Fowley-Doyle

The Accident Season

Name of Book: The Accident Season

Author: Mora Fowley-Doyle

Page Count: 280

I Read it In: Paperback

Goodreads Overall Star Rating: 3.61 stars

My Star Rating: 3 stars

Goodreads Summary:

It's the accident season, the same time every year. Bones break, skin tears, bruises bloom.

The accident season has been part of seventeen-year-old Cara's life for as long as she can remember. Towards the end of October, foreshadowed by the deaths of many relatives before them, Cara's family becomes inexplicably accident-prone. They banish knives to locked drawers, cover sharp table edges with padding, switch off electrical items - but injuries follow wherever they go, and the accident season becomes an ever-growing obsession and fear.

But why are they so cursed? And how can they break free?

My Review: Some of this review is spoiler free, the last section will warn you that it contains spoilers, if you have not read it yet, please do not read after the warning and just go read the book instead.

Plot: The plot of this novel begins and ends. I mean that in, it has a strong beginning, and contrary to what I've read from other people, I feel that it ends. The whole Accident season mythology type idea really had me going. As a fan of fantasy, magical realism is a nice break from all of the kingdoms and whatnot. I was really intrigued with the back stories of the characters and how they all ended up where they did. There is also a slight mystery involved about a character and that's half of why I kept reading. For me, being a fantasy lover, I felt that the middle of the book seemed to drag on and I can see why some readers would get confused. For those of you who love contemporary with some magical realism and a hint of ghost you will love this!

Characters: The family involved in the accident season is the heart of this story. There are some secondary characters, and their stories are important too. I felt for all of the characters and I wanted to know more about them throughout the story. I don't read enough contemporary to really know if this aspect was well done, but it was for sure a character driven novel.

Life Issues Dealt With:
The Accident Season deals with issues that a lot of books do not. The author covered issues from "step brother-sister love," to lgbt to divorced families and domestic abuse. As an author that was risky but it was done well and added to the story.

Her Next Book: Don't forget the author has another book coming out in 2017 with a really cool premise. If you want to look it up on Goodreads it is called Spellbook of the Lost and Found.

For those of you who haven't read this yet, past this point contains spoilers so go do something else. :p

Spoilers: I can see why people complain about the ending, I do think it wrapped everything up in an interesting way but I felt like it could of been done slightly better and more conclusive. The part that I felt was unnecessary was the party and the events of that night. The whole channeling thing I didn't enjoy very much and that's coming from a lover of fantasy. I felt like that aspect really took away from what the book and made it rather confusing. On the other hand the explanation for Elise I thought was done perfectly. Overall I enjoyed the read, it was different from what I usually read and wasn't a waste of time. I'm just not jumping with joy over it.
